Fridge insulation

I live in Australia. Recently my wife & I cruised from Melbourne to the beautiful tropical coral reefs of the Whitsundays, off the central north Queensland coast, some 2500 miles.

The greatest inconvenience on this trip was the inefficiency of our fridge/freezer.

We replaced the compressor in Mackay with the hope of some improved efficiency by it still needed to run some 23 hours out of 24. This may be convenient whilst connected to shore power but totally useless at other times.

The fridge unit has NO external insulation - it's just a fibreglass box with a lid. To remove this box I would need to remove all the freezing lines then pull the beautiful cabinet apart which would no doubt cause irreparable damage.

Has anyone experienced this lack of insulation (probably not such a problem in Europe) or have any suggestions as to how I may overcome this problem (my wife refuses to sail to the tropics again if the fridge is not properly functioning).
